OMAKASE

o·ma·ka·se

Is a Japanese phrase meaning “I’ll leave it up to you.” Omakase is the ultimate expression of trust to a sushi chef. It is also a chance for one who enjoys sushi to expand horizons and try new items that have been overlooked. This may not be the meal of choice for one who is set in his ways or does not like trying new things. However, it can heighten the experience for those who already enjoy sushi or entice some who have never tried sushi to consider it.

THE CHEF

MIKE HAM “Sushi Mike”

Executive Chef

Executive Chef and owner, Mike Ham, learned how to make sushi while living in Jacksonville, Florida while working as an accountant. Working on a long-term project, Mike became a regular at a local sushi restaurant, and was intrigued by the chef. He eventually left his accounting job and began to study with the chef. Mike traveled across the country with his mentor to perfect his craft, working in New York, and eventually settling into Chicago.

Mike opened the first Tanoshii (translated means pleasant or delightful) sushi location in Andersonville in 2004 and now has a second location, Sapporo Tanoshii (translated means happy village) in Algonquin.
